Barby's work reflects the ever-changing movement and softness of
improvisational music. She is inspired by jazz and by the beauty and
elegance of the instruments themselves.
As an art history/visual culture major, Barby completed extensive
research on early 20th century American music and its effects on culture
around the world. She is inspired by its ability to soften the heart and
inspire the soul. Many musicians have commented on how each piece
reflects that feeling.
Barby seeks beauty and humor in her work and to fill a space with joyful
elegance. Her work resembles musical caricatures, reflecting her love
for animation and cartooning. It is meant to remind us to take time for
music that washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. "Welcome
to my sculpture garden. Enjoy something each day and don't forget to
listen to your favorite song as often as possible. The only way to get
rid of the blues is to sing the blues."
